A Look Back at the History of the Hacker Magazine

Recently, our editor-in-chief Valentin Kholmogorov celebrated his birthday. In jest, I suggested that he become the most hardened of editors not only in life, but also in the credits of the magazine. This led to me spending three evenings in a row in archaeological excavations.
Valentin pointed out an oversight – not a “hardened”, they say, editor, but “obscene”, he missed the letter. This reminded me of the joke that our ancient ancestors pleased themselves and readers with – the first edition of the Hacker.
Editors in early editions of the magazine were called “the most important”, “the most gamer”, “the most harmful” and so on. Ivan “SideX” Kornoukhov first appeared in the credits with the title of “just like an editor”, but soon surpassed everyone and became known as “the most drunken editor.” Then he rebranded into the “most beer” and at the end of his career at “Hacker” – into the “most deadline”.
I am often asked to tell something from the history of the magazine, but I came to work at Hacker only in 2015 – in the team of Ilya Rusanen. In order to have at least some historical context, I sometimes go on an expedition to draw the wisdom of my ancestors from the original source – the old issues of Hacker.
This time, my quest was to turn the titles of the magazine into a huge table, from which it is easy to find out who came to the editorial office and left it when and for which headings he was responsible.

Chief Editors

The main interest, of course, was to editors-in-chief. They changed not so often with us, it is easy to follow them, and each of them (us) personifies a whole era in the life of the magazine.
1999–2002 — Sergey “SINtez” Pokrovsky
2002–2004 — Alexander «2poisonS» Sidorovsky
2004–2006 – Ivan “Cutter” Petrov
2006–2012 — Nikita “Nikitos” Kislitsin
2012–2014 — Stepan «Step» Ilyin
2014–2015 — Ilya Ilembitov
2015–2018 — Ilya Rusanen
since 2018 – Andrey Pismenny
Not all chief editors, having left the post, went far from it. Pokrovsky, for example, worked for Gameland for a long time, Ilembitov continued to maintain his columns for several months, and Rusanen is still with us – he commands the infrastructure and the development of internal tools.
The absolute champion in long-term chief editorship (so far?) is Nikita Kislitsin, who steered the magazine for six years – from April 2006 to May 2012, and started as an editor of Vzlom two years earlier (at the age of 18!). In room 160 you can read his farewell Intro.
Unfortunately, now we can only find out where Nikita is and what is happening to him from the news. We hope they are good!

Other Editors

Nikolai “gorl” Andreev was the constant. He was the first editor of the magazine, and he worked in the editorial office until the end of the 2000s.
The magazine was also edited by Dmitry “Kot” Kotov, who was responsible for the “Game” section, and by Alexander “Kot” Kotov, who was responsible for the “Hardware” section.
