Elon Musk recently announced via a tweet that Twitter will be archiving inactive accounts that have not been logged into for “several years”. This is to make certain usernames available again, as the platform was founded in 2006 and has over 200 million daily users. Ex-Meta CEO John Carmack raised the importance of preserving old tweets after Musk’s revelation, to which Musk responded that old accounts are archived, but not how. Twitter is a “digital city square” and a huge resource for historical events, such as the 2011 Arab Spring and the 2016 US elections. Twitter has made a lot of changes lately, such as introducing Twitter Blue and withdrawing free API access. The platform is also experiencing a huge drop in advertising revenue, partly due to the alleged increase in unwanted content. Microsoft recently stopped supporting the platform on its advertising platform.
