Samsung has agreed to continue using AMD’s Radeon GPU technology in future System-on-a-Chip (SoC) designs. This agreement dates back to 2019, with the first product to emerge from the deal being the Exynos 2200 SoC found in the European models of the Galaxy S22. This chip used the same RDNA2 architecture found in the PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and Radeon RX 6000 Series desktop and laptop GPUs, and supported hardware ray tracing.
Despite this, Samsung opted not to use AMD’s GPU tech for this year’s S23. Demand for gaming phones is limited, and mobile game offerings are set to support weaker smartphones as well. The agreement also stipulates that Samsung is not allowed to compete with AMD.
Recently, it was reported that the existing Exynos chips had 18 zero-day vulnerabilities, which have since been patched.
