OpenAI Releases GPT-4 API to Developers

OpenAI has officially released its GPT-4 language model via an API, allowing organizations with a paying API subscription to its services to get started with the model. OpenAI describes GPT-4 as “our most capable model” and millions of developers have expressed interest in the model with the release of the ChatGPT API.

GPT-4 Offers Wider Range of Prompts

GPT-4 differs from its predecessors in its wider range of prompts. Developers can now place an image with the assignment they give to the chatbot. This feature is currently still in the testing phase and is therefore not yet available. Later this month, new API developers should also be given access to GPT-4. How many new developers get access at the same time will depend on the availability of computing power.

ChatGPT Losing Popularity

OpenAI may be hoping to gain public attention again with the release of GPT-4. According to analysts from Similarweb, the company’s chatbot attracted fewer visitors for the first time last month. In June 2023, the chatbot generated 9.7 percent less web traffic than in May. Microsoft’s chatbot showed a small decrease in web traffic, while Google’s Bard attracted about the same number of visitors. David F. Carr, senior analyst at Similarweb, believes that chatbots will now have to prove their worth instead of taking it for granted.

OpenAI Tried to Commercialize ChatGPT

OpenAI also tried to commercialize its chatbot earlier with ChatGPT Plus. That subscription always gives users access to the tool, works faster and gives users faster access to new features. The company tried to switch users to the paid version soon after the introduction of ChatGPT, because Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, admitted to Elon Musk that he can cry a lot when he looks at how much it costs to provide ChatGPT with sufficient computing power.

Competition is Starting

The competition for ChatGPT is increasing. At the launch of the chatbot, OpenAI was still relatively alone in the field of these tools. Later on, Bing Chat joined, which runs on GPT-4. When an established name like Microsoft enters the market, it is clear that the competition is increasing.
