Microsoft has repeatedly spoken out against the use of passwords and now it seems intends to take the plunge and completely abandon them in its products.
As the tech giant explained in a message on its website, using passwords is not only troublesome, but also risky: according to statistics, approximately 80% of cyber attacks are aimed at passwords, and in the case of corporate accounts, 1 in 250 corporate accounts are compromised every month.
The company has already unveiled a number of technologies for passwordless authentication, such as Windows Hello, Microsoft Authenticator or FIDO2 security keys, which it says more than 150 million people use. In 2021, Microsoft plans to launch a converged registration portal that allows password management through the My Apps app.
The idea of using services without entering a password while maintaining privacy and security is certainly attractive, but many users may have concerns about whether to trust a single company or service, which could be a significant problem for Microsoft.
