Mercedes-Benz Introduces ChatGPT Voice Assistant to MBUX Infotainment System
Beta Program Now Available
Mercedes-Benz has announced the launch of a beta program for owners of cars with the MBUX infotainment system. Starting today, June 16, customers can access the capabilities of ChatGPT, a versatile language model that can engage in open conversations and generate information on various topics.
The AI agent is powered by ChatGPT in conjunction with Microsoft AI and is designed to accept voice commands and make meaningful conversations. Mercedes assures customers that the voice assistant will make it easier to concentrate on the road while performing essential tasks.
Voice Control Capabilities Refined
The implementation of ChatGPT is part of Mercedes’ ongoing efforts to refine voice control capabilities and further develop the intuitive voice assistant. The voice assistant can help with tasks such as summarizing content and synthesizing data.
Users can ask about their destination, request recipe suggestions or get answers to complex questions while keeping their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road. The voice data collected during interactions with ChatGPT is anonymized and stored in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud.
Some may wonder if it is practical to perform complex tasks such as searching for nearby dining options while driving. However, Mercedes emphasizes scenarios in which the AI assistant can offer added value. For example, if passengers aren’t available to help with specific questions, the voice assistant can be helpful in finding recommendations or navigating unfamiliar areas.
If you are worried about your privacy, then you are not unfounded. The conversations are stored and used to gain insight into the user’s preferences.
To join the beta program, simply say, “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program.” Mercedes-Benz is working with Google to improve car software, so customers can expect more features and capabilities to be added in the future.
