European Investment Bank Hit by Cyber Attack, Claimed by KillNet

The European Investment Bank (EIB) was the victim of a cyber attack on Monday evening, making its websites eib.org and eif.org inaccessible. The attack was claimed by KillNet, a hacker group that has been waging a digital war since March 2022.

KillNet’s Threats

KillNet threatened the European banking sector with disastrous cyber attacks in the middle of last week. In a video distributed by the group, they called on other hacker groups to bring down the European banking system. “No money, no weapons, no government in Kiev,” the threat sounded.
The masked man in the video concluded his message with a warning that the world had never seen such problems before. KillNet specializes in DDoS attacks aimed at companies and government institutions that express support for Ukraine. It is likely that this type of attack made the EIB websites inaccessible.

REvil Joins the Fight

KillNet appears to have joined forces with another well-known pro-Russian hacker collective, REvil. “If God rules Russia, who rules Europe? That’s right, the banking system”, began their message aimed at the European banking sector. “No money, no problems. REvil is sufficiently familiar with the European financial structure. See you soon.”
The REvil collective may consist of members who took an even smaller position in the group in 2022. The membership base will also be further expanded, as a blog page appeared a few months after the arrests.
The European Investment Bank has yet to comment on the perpetrator of the attack, but it is clear that KillNet and REvil are behind the cyber attack. It is yet to be seen what kind of damage the hacker groups will cause to the European banking sector.
