Istio Service Mesh Reaches Mature Status

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) has assigned the maximum maturity level to Istio service mesh, making it the same as Kubernetes, Prometheus, Envoy and other cloud-native technologies. This announcement has been made by the Administrator of CNCF, and it means that Istio will now receive the same attention from the CNCF as the other cloud-native technologies.

Rapid Acceptance

Experts believe that the rapid acceptance of the technology is because it was already well-developed before Google handed it over to the CNCF. Furthermore, there are now enough developers, including all major network and cloud providers, who are expanding and updating the technology, and more and more organizations are offering cloud-native technology. The team behind Istio has also contributed significantly to the development of other technology, such as a traffic management model used in the Kubernetes Gateway API.

What is Istio?

Istio is an open-source service mesh that provides a unified and efficient way to secure, connect and monitor services in cloud-based applications. It provides zero-trust networking, policy enforcement, traffic management, load balancing and monitoring functionality, among other things. Applications do not need to be rewritten for this.
The service was originally developed by Google and IBM. Istio service mesh is built on Lyft’s Envoy project.
