Google Bard: What Can You Do With the Chatbot and For What Purposes Is It Suitable?
Google Bard, the chatbot from Google, has become available in Europe, including language support for Dutch and even text-to-speech. What can you do with the chatbot and for what purposes is it suitable?
Google Bard: Available in Europe
Google Bard was made available in an experimental form in the United States a few months ago. The chatbot has gradually been refined and now includes the ability to share comments from Bard and to share images to Bard, although the latter is only available in English at the moment.
In the Netherlands, and in Dutch, Google Bard has become available today. Anyone who wants to use the bot must be logged in with a Google Account. The suggestions show that Google positions the tool as a useful source of inspiration rather than a useful professional tool.
Google Bard: Professional Purposes?
When asked whether Google Bard can be used for professional purposes, it responded with a resounding “yes”. After a number of positives, Bard closes with the disclaimer: “I’m not perfect and I sometimes make mistakes. However, I am always learning and I will do my best to give you the best experience.”
This is in stark contrast to ChatGPT, which responds a lot more cautiously to the same question: “While as an AI assistant I can offer useful information and suggestions, it is important to understand that, as a language model, I do not have professional expertise in specific areas.” The OpenAI chatbot recommends consulting an expert.
A few questions later, it turns out that the Google chatbot is very often repetitive. It is also striking that the bot still betrays its own American origin. For example, it uses Fahrenheit and miles per hour and sometimes a special tone can be recognized in Dutch, which is often created by a translation machine.
Initially, Bard states that it doesn’t know anything about you, but it asks questions in return to get to know you better.
Google Bard: Intended for Text, Programming Code, Scheduling
A generative AI chatbot is bound by many limits. An LLM depends on a dataset and as a tool it must comply with international legislation, which limits the information gathering and impact of a chatbot.
In principle, Bard is suitable as an option to summarize texts, compose e-mail messages or give suggestions about planning. Another interesting possibility is to generate programming code.
