Docker is Now More Popular than NPM as the Most Used Developer Tool

Docker is the Most Popular Tool Among Experienced Developers

Docker has overtaken npm as the most used developer tool, according to the annual Stack Overflow survey into the popularity of tooling. Docker has scored particularly high among experienced developers who prefer to continue using the same tools. Npm is in second place, although in 2022 the order was reversed.

Npm is the Most Popular Tool Among New Developers

Npm is the most popular tool among new developers, often in combination with languages such as JavaScript and Python.
Under the async tooling segment, markdown is on the rise, entering the top three for the first time. The most important tools in this segment are Confluence in second place, with Jira in first. New developers prefer to use GitHub Discussions, markdown, Jira and to a much lesser extent Confluence.
Phoenix is the most loved web framework, and Rust the most admired language.

Developers are Increasingly Learning and Seeking Information Online

Stack Overflow’s research also found that developers are increasingly learning and seeking information online. However, learning costs have increased over the past year due to inflation.
In addition, the use of AI tools among developers has also increased further. About 70 percent of the respondents indicate that they will use this type of tooling in their development process this year. Furthermore, 42 percent of current ChatGPT users for development work also plan to look at Google Bard and Bing AI next year.
