The co-founders of Google DeepMind and LinkedIn have created a new AI chatbot called ‘Pi’. It joins an already crowded field of generative AI-powered platforms, such as Microsoft’s OpenAI, Google, and Snap. Pi is the first product from Inflection AI, a year-old startup.
Users can have personal conversations with the chatbot via an app, text, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. Pi provides “supportive, informative conversations” and has the personality of a sympathetic sounding board. The product has been beta-tested by users for several months and has a limited use case, making it safer and easier to monitor.
Pi is not designed for completing tasks such as making lists, coding, travel plans, writing marketing strategies, or essays. Instead, it is focused on “everyday, trivial and banal” conversations. Inflection AI gave the Financial Times a live demo of the chatbot, which concluded its answers with a question to the user to encourage dialogue.
Inflection AI, founded by Mustafa Suleyman, Karén Simonyan, and LinkedIn creator Reid Hoffman, is part of a group of AI start-ups that are “racing to build advanced computer programs that can write scripts and create art in seconds,” according to the Financial Times.
