Microsoft Renames Azure AD to Microsoft Entra ID
Microsoft is bringing its identity and access management tool, Azure Active Directory (AD), into its Identity and Access suite under the new name Microsoft Entra ID. The move makes sense from Microsoft’s point of view, but may cause confusion among users.
Azure AD will be housed within Entra, alongside Permissions Management, Verified ID, ID Governance, Workload ID, Internet Access and Private Access. Entra is an umbrella term for a portfolio of Microsoft products, and has only been around for a year.
Microsoft sought to avoid any potential backlash from the name change by reassuring users in a blog post: “I want to assure you that your work to protect your organization, customers, partners and the investments you have made in deploying Azure AD will continue uninterrupted. All configurations and integrations will continue to work as they do now, without you having to do anything. You will see the new name appear in Microsoft Product Experiences in August 2023.”
However, the name change may still cause difficulties for IT administrators, who will need to update manuals and internal documents.
