Android 14 Final Testing Phase: What to Expect
Google is asking app developers to “complete compatibility testing and publish any necessary updates”, suggesting an August or September launch date for Android 14. The current test version can be used for bug fixes in Pixel phones from 4a and via the Android Emulator.
New Features
Android 14 is an update towards accessibility rather than resounding changes. For example, there will be an option to choose 200% scaling, which is intended to make text as clearly visible as possible. This is especially helpful for visually impaired people who have smaller screens on their phones.
Another interesting feature is referred to as “predictive back gestures”. This option will communicate what a swipe back action will actually perform. This will help avoid frustration when an app quickly forgets the most recent page and accidentally closes it.
The Right Treatment
Google has also included the new Grammatical Inflection API. This can ensure that the user is treated appropriately in languages with many grammatical genders. Currently, for example, a woman can be addressed with male conjugations, while the app may have already given a gender choice. Now that should be solved without too much work for developers.
