The End of Google Analytics 3: What Are Your Options?

Google Analytics 3 (Universal Analytics) is officially no longer supported as of July 1, leaving website owners to switch to Google Analytics 4. Unfortunately, Google Analytics 4 lacks essential features such as bounce rate and average session time. What other options are available for website owners?

Matomo

Matomo, formerly known as Piwik, is the most popular open-source alternative to Google Analytics since its launch in 2007. It offers an on-prem or cloud-based version, and existing data can be easily imported when switching from Google Analytics. The setup process is simple, and the tool is open-source, allowing for extensive customization. Matomo promises to produce accurate information as it does not sample data. The on-prem version is free, while the cloud version costs 19 euros per month. The pricing model is mainly aimed at offering separate functions as extras that are charged on an annual basis. User tracking, an adjustable dashboard, and the locations of visitors are included as standard.
However, there is criticism about the user interface, which is described as outdated by several customers. A particularly critical review also mentioned lousy customer service and bugs that questioned the accuracy of the analytics. Fortunately, thanks to the free offer, it is possible to try the tool yourself. In principle, the tool can be used for almost any website where it is important to keep track of how well the content scores and which visitors one receives.

Piwik Pro

Piwik Pro is the successor of the old name of Matomo. It offers a cloud-based version of the analytics tool, with the same features as Matomo. It also offers additional features such as a customer service team, an improved user interface, and a data export API. The pricing model is based on the number of page views, with plans starting at 9 euros per month.
Overall, Matomo and Piwik Pro are both great alternatives to Google Analytics 3. Matomo is a great choice for those who want to customize the tool and don’t mind the outdated user interface. Piwik Pro is a great choice for those who want a cloud-based version with additional features and a better user interface.
