DTC Proactively Warns Companies About Cyber Threats 35,000 Times Since June 2021
The Digital Trust Center (DTC) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs has been proactively warning companies about cyber threats 35,000 times since June 2021. Cyber experts report emerging cyber threats to the DTC, after which steps are taken to warn organizations where necessary. In the first half of 2023, there were already 58 cases of a “serious digital threat or vulnerability”.
Data Essential for Proactive Alerts
Project leader Kim van der Veen states that more and more sources are connected to the data processing systems on which the DTC depends. “Previously, we sometimes couldn’t find a company name with a found vulnerability, but we could find data from network owners, for example an internet service provider (ISP) or managed service provider (MSP). We see that the network owners play an important role as a link between the DTC and the system manager. For this reason, we are now also reporting directly to these network owners and count on them to take their responsibility and either solve this cyber threat or pass it on to the relevant company affected by the vulnerability.”
Focus Needed on Preventive Means in IT Security
At the end of last year, the EMEA CISO at Zscaler Tony Fergusson already announced that more focus is needed on preventive means in IT security. The contribution of the DTC to this is therefore certainly desirable.
Incidentally, it is not just a warning message for vulnerable companies. These parties can also contact the DTC for questions about resolving existing vulnerabilities. According to the DTC, the reactions are “mostly positive”.
