The iPhone 16 Pro models could revolutionize mobile photography through periscope lens technology. In a recent update, Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that both iPhone 16 Pro models will benefit from this innovative feature. Kuo’s insight suggests the iPhone 16 Pro will be slightly larger than its predecessors, allowing for more internal space. This larger size will enable Apple to introduce the periscope lens for the first time on both premium devices, promising improved optical zoom capabilities and enhanced photography experiences.
Noted display analyst Ross Young previously shared that Apple plans to introduce new iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max screen sizes. The smaller iPhone 16 Pro is likely to have a 6.3-inch screen, while the larger iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a 6.9-inch screen. This strategic move is in line with earlier predictions by Kuo, which points to Apple’s habit of reserving advanced hardware features for its top models and expanding them to other devices in the years that follow. Kuo further revealed that Apple’s trusted partner Cowell will provide the periscope camera system.
This innovative technology uses an angled mirror to redirect the light entering the telephoto lens to the image sensor. This “folded” telephoto arrangement allows a greater zoom range without compromising image quality. While the current iPhone 14 Pro supports up to 3x optical zoom, the iPhone 15 Pro is expected to offer an impressive 5-6x optical zoom range. It remains to be seen whether the zoom capabilities in the 2024 Pro and Pro Max models will see further improvements.
