Eurocontrol has suffered a major attack from pro-Russian hackers, causing disruption to European civil and military air traffic control systems. Airlines were forced to use older communication systems, such as a fax-based backup system, to communicate flight schedules. Eurocontrol has stated that air safety was never compromised.
The Wall Street Journal has reported that the attack also affected Eurocontrol’s internal systems, preventing its 2,000 employees from accessing communication systems such as email. The attack was claimed by pro-Russian hackers, likely due to Eurocontrol’s ties with NATO in relation to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
