The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) was recently hit by a ransomware attack. Sources within the KNVB have revealed that the responsible group, Lockbit, is demanding more than one million euros in ransom. The affected disk contains important personal data of (former) players, trainers and board members of the national teams, including copies of identity documents and contracts.
It is believed that the KNVB was hacked due to an employee falling for a phishing email. The Football Association is said to be in a state of panic as they consider their options; pay the ransom or attempt to retrieve the encrypted data in another way. The KNVB is very concerned that Lockbit will publish the sensitive information online.
Lockbit has now confirmed to RTL Nieuws that they are behind the hack. The KNVB has yet to make any official announcements.
