Meta’s AI team has made the Animated Drawings tool open-source, with the hope that developers can build on it with their own implementations. The tool, which has been available in prototype form since late 2021, allows users to animate drawings and photos using artificial intelligence. By using the tool, users agree that their content is used for further training of the AI.
Meta has previously released the results of its AI developments, such as a large AI model that scientists were allowed to use last year. The company also made a dataset of approximately 180,000 drawings available for training the AI, which it filtered for quality to achieve the desired result. Inappropriate or copyrighted images, as well as non-English text, were removed from the dataset.
It remains to be seen what the results of the opening of Animated Drawings will be, but Meta hopes that developers can respond to the wishes that users had after they were introduced to the tool. These include the ability to animate multiple characters at once, as well as the ability to export the results of the tool with transparent backgrounds.
