The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) will take a closer look at ChatGPT through a task force, which could be a first step towards general privacy legislation within the European Union, according to Reuters.
The EDPB’s plan is not entirely unexpected, as the Italian government has already banned the OpenAI chatbot, allowing it to be used again only under strict conditions. This has led to a movement towards a general law that sets out the privacy guidelines for AI development.
Concerns about the entire West are being raised regarding the privacy issues surrounding generative AI. Chatbots like ChatGPT are currently working by passing a huge dataset that analyzes the AI model in question. Much of this data contains copyright, but is nevertheless used to train the AI. This has caused dissatisfaction among many parties, with OpenAI and Microsoft, among others, facing lawsuits over these alleged violations.
According to an anonymous source cited by Reuters, EU member states are largely not looking for punishment. Instead, policymakers are seeking a solution that brings about “transparent” regulation.
