Reserve Bank of New Zealand (the country’s central bank) announced that it was hit by a hacker attack. It turned out that the cybercriminals gained access to data stored by the bank’s hosting partner.
Central bank governor Adrian Orr writes that unnamed third parties were able to access the file-sharing service the bank uses to store and exchange confidential information. Although the attack was quickly detected and contained, it is believed that the incident was likely to have revealed commercial and personal confidential information.
“We are working closely with local and international cybersecurity experts and other relevant authorities as part of our investigation and response to this attack. The nature and extent of the information potentially accessed is still being determined, ”Orr writes.
Bank officials emphasize that the affected system has already been secured and shut down pending an investigation that will take time.
