Huawei’s first beta Harmony OS looks suspiciously like Android

The Harmony OS mobile operating system is the first OS from Huawei. It is supposed to replace Android on the company’s smartphones, since the current version of Android without Google services (Google Mobile Services, GMS) is not enough for Huawei mobile devices.

Huawei recently began its long transition from Android without GMS to its own mobile OS by sending out the first beta of Harmony OS 2.0 to select smartphones and tablets. While the emergence of an independent OS would seem to allow the mobile ecosystem to finally break out of the Apple iOS and Google Android duopoly, it looks like Huawei has never been able to ditch the OS from Google. As it turned out, the first beta version of Harmony OS 2.0 is the same Android.

One developer wrote a simple Hello World app for an older version of Android (Kitkat 4.4.4) and found it throwing the same error message on both Android and Harmony OS virtual devices.

Hikari_calyx, a senior member of the XDA Developers community of mobile developers, known for his work on unlocking bootloaders on Nokia mobile devices, compiled and installed the famous Superuser application on a virtual device running Harmony OS, which allows you to get superuser rights on Android. After installing the app, my device received the following error message: “This app is for older versions of Harmony OS and may not work correctly. Check for updates or contact the developer. “

Moreover, you can send instructions to devices running Harmony OS using the ADB (Android Debug Bridge). For example, in this way one developer was able to extract most of the system partition from a virtual device and demonstrate that the assembly contains the Android framework.

XDA Developers have provided several possible explanations for all of the above. One would assume that Harmony OS 2.0 is only a rebranding of Android and will remain so in the future. However, according to experts, although this is currently the case, this may change in the future.

As Huawei has mentioned in its past presentations, using the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) will serve as a transitional step towards creating the desired Harmony OS experience. That is, AOSP is a way to bridge the gap for both users and application developers. Leveraging the existing AppGallery ecosystem and HMS will give the momentum it needs, and this transitional step is essential for Harmony OS to get it going.
