Denis Dubnikov, co-founder of cryptocurrency exchanges EggChange and Crypto Coyote, recently pleaded guilty to charges related to money laundering for the extortionist group Ryuk. Dubnikov was detained in the Netherlands in 2021 at the request of US law enforcement agencies. According to the FBI, $400,000 worth of cryptocurrency (about 35 bitcoins at the exchange rate of that time) passed through his accounts, and law enforcement officers associated these funds with the activities of the Ryuk cryptographer. He was arrested while trying to spend a vacation in Mexico and extradited to the United States in August 2022. In February 2023, Dubnikov pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to launder money. Last week, he was sentenced to the time already served and a $10,000 settlement. The court also ordered the Russian to comply with the conditions of supervision, including regularly reporting to the police, taking drug tests, and voluntarily providing DNA samples at the request of the authorities.
