GitLab Introduces Achievements to Recognize Developers
GitLab, the platform for developers, is introducing Achievements to recognize developers for their contribution. With this new feature, developers can make a nice overview of the various projects they have worked on.
What are GitLab Achievements?
GitLab Achievements is a feature that enables Maintainers and Owners of a project to recognize a developer for their contribution. When a developer is recognized, an icon appears on their GitLab user profile. By hovering over the icon with your mouse, you can see a more detailed explanation.
Gamification
The icons and pictures used in GitLab Achievements are familiar to gamers. They are often used by game developers to reward gamers for their performance in the game. According to GitLab, this new layer can be motivating for developers. It shows that their work is valued and recognized by their environment and manager.
Nick Veenhof, director of contributor success at GitLab, and Christina Lohr, senior product manager at GitLab, wrote in an accompanying blog post that rewarding users for acquiring a skill can lead to a more talented team, benefiting the organization and the employee.
The feature is currently available as a test version. As a result, you will have to manually enable Achievements yourself.
