Cryptocurrency exchange Bitrue reported that it was hacked by unknown attackers. As a result of the attack on one of the hot wallets, the platform lost $23 million worth of assets, including Ethereum (ETH), Polygon (MATIC), Shiba Inu (SHIB), Quant (QNT), GALA and Holo (HOT). The Singapore-based company said in an official statement that the affected hot wallet held less than 5% of Bitrue’s total funds, and the rest of their wallets remain safe and have not been compromised.
Bitrue has temporarily suspended the withdrawal of funds while they conduct a thorough review, but the developers report that the platform will soon return to normal operation, except for operations with QNT, MATIC and HOT. All users whose funds have been stolen will receive full compensation, and blockchain analysts from PeckShield have tracked the stolen funds, noting that the attackers have already converted part of the funds into Ethereum.
The exact details of the attack are still unknown, but this is not the first attack on Bitrue. In June 2019, a hacker stole almost $5 million from the exchange by exploiting a vulnerability, and the clients were fully reimbursed for the lost funds.
