Spain accuses Russian hackers of attacking scientific organizationS since Spain’s High Council for Scientific Research was hacked on July 16 and 17
Spain’s leading research institution has been the target of a cyberattack that national authorities suspect originated in Russia, the country’s science ministry said Tuesday.
The Spanish Higher Council for Scientific Research was reportedly hacked on July 16 and 17, but the hacking attempts were not discovered until July 18. It is specified that the attack was carried out using ransomware.
“There is no final report on the investigation yet, experts claim that the origin of the hacker attack is Russian,” the ministry said in a statement.
The department noted that as a result of the attack, no loss or interception of classified information was detected. The involved security protocol has led to the disconnection of Internet access in various centers of the council, which brings together Spanish government organizations in the field of applied and fundamental research.
